Our feet carry the bulk of our daily burden for us every day, but they are often not cared for as much as they should be. In fact, the feet are often the most neglected part of the body. This could probably be because they are out of sight – but they should not be out of mind as well! Less than pretty feet can bring down your overall appearance. What’s more, most people don’t know how to keep their feet healthy and beautiful. A key part of foot care involves understanding why your feet develop hard skin, and why it is important to take care of your feet every single day.
What is the hard skin on my feet?
Hard skin on the feet can look different for different people. Skin hardness is a scale, not a condition that you may or may not have. The most common kind of skin hardness involves rough patches of hard skin that are usually yellowish in colour. They often occur around the heel or on the ball of the foot. The skin is usually less sensitive to the touch than the skin surrounding it, and it is quite thick. These areas of hardened skin, often referred to as calluses, are less defined in size and shape than corns (corns are often softer but have similar causes). Hard skin develops when the skin constantly rubs against something (such as a tight shoe), and the skin responds by hardening as a sign of self-defence. Thus, calluses are formed on the bony parts of the foot, which take most of your body weight as you walk. Walking barefoot on hard surfaces or sustained heavy pressure (such as caused by running) can speed up the formation of calluses on the feet. This explains why athletes are particularly susceptible to the formation of hard skin on their feet.
How should I remove it?
Removing hard skin is easy enough when you are armed with one of Scholl’s electronic foot file products. These can be easily tailored to your individual needs, with adjustable roller heads that can take off really hard skin, or if you are just looking to prevent future hard skin build-up on certain areas of the feet. The Electronic Foot File can be customised to fit your specific needs with different roller heads, making sure that your feet are always at their smoothest and softest.
Why is it important?
Apart from giving you the confidence to flaunt your feet whenever you want, and the knowledge that your feet are as well-groomed and healthy as possible, preventing hard skin on the feet is also important for other reasons.
Calluses and the build-up of hard skin on your feet can reduce skin sensitivity over a period of time. If left untreated, the skin can become dry, swollen, ridged or even cracked; this can be very painful and as you can imagine, may lead to further skin complications.
How can I make sure I avoid hard skin?
There are several ways to prevent the formation of hard skin on your feet:
- Wear comfortable shoes that fit properly and which do not pinch your skin.
- React to foot pain at once, instead of later. This can prevent future problems.
- Dry your feet properly after your shower so that the skin remains healthy and beautiful.
- Find and stick to a daily foot care routine that works for you. You can soon care for your feet every day like a pro, so that your feet always look and feel beautiful.
